Footwork (rear court)

Badminton / Popular

Reach rear-court corners with chasse, scissor, and recovery steps.

What coaches agree on

  • Every movement to the rear corners starts with a split step, timed to just before your opponent hits the shuttle so you're already loaded to push off.
  • Which exact footwork you use for the corner depends on how much time the lift gives you: a high, slow lift lets you fully set up with a chasse or even a jump, while a flatter or later lift calls for a quicker option like a scissor kick or jumping out to intercept it.

  • Push off with the leg farthest from the corner you're moving to, since that's the leg that actually launches you toward the shuttle.
  • Land in the corner wide and low rather than narrow and tall, absorbing the impact through your hip and leg so the rebound carries you straight back toward the centre.

Common mistakes

  • Staying square to the net instead of turning side-on before the scissor kick or jump, which causes over-rotation and a loss of both power and control.
  • Letting the torso collapse forward during the lunge instead of staying upright and core-engaged, which costs power, control, and a fast recovery.
