Grip technique

Badminton / Popular

Switch between forehand, backhand, bevel, and panhandle grips cleanly.

What coaches agree on

  • The forehand grip is your default for shots on your racket-hand side, including overhead clears, smashes and drops; switch to backhand or bevel the moment the shuttle is on your other side.
  • Reach for the bevel grip - thumb resting on the ridge halfway between forehand and backhand - when a shot needs extra touch and control, most often at the net.

  • Fast, automatic grip changes come from dedicated practice - shadowing the switch, then adding feeds, then live rallies - not from match play alone.

Common mistakes

  • Gripping the racket too tightly stops it rotating freely in your hand and kills the finger power that gives shots their touch, control and speed.
