Fixing a Puncture

Cycling / Popular

Remove the wheel, replace a tube, and reinflate roadside.

What coaches agree on

  • Before fitting the tube, feel around the inside of the tire to find and remove whatever caused the flat. If nothing turns up there, check the rim tape and valve core too.
  • Put a little air into the new or repaired tube before tucking it into the tire, just enough for it to hold its shape.
  • You only need to get one side of the tire off the rim — leave the other bead seated, pull the tube out through the gap, and refitting is easier too.

Common mistakes

  • Pinching the tube with a tire lever, or leaving it trapped under the bead without checking, causes it to blow out or flat again the moment you inflate it.
