Fit tubeless tyres, add sealant and seat the bead.

What coaches agree on

  • Clean and fully dry the rim bed before taping, then wrap the tape under firm tension and press out every air bubble so it forms a complete seal.
  • Fit each side of the tyre bead starting opposite the valve and work your way around to finish at the valve last.

  • Seat the tyre with air first before adding any sealant, then let the air out, pull the valve core, and inject the sealant straight through the stem.

Common mistakes

  • Cranking the valve retaining nut down tight with pliers instead of finger-tight, which scratches the finish and can jam the valve so it won't come out at the roadside.
  • Mixing different tyre sealant brands, or topping fresh sealant onto old sealant of another brand, which reacts and curdles or splits instead of sealing.
  • Cutting or slitting the valve hole through the rim tape with a knife, which tears the tape and leaves a weak point that leaks; piercing a small round hole with a pick avoids this.
