How to choose golf clubs

Golf / Popular

Pick a starter set and understand shafts, lofts and what each club is for.

What coaches agree on

  • You're allowed 14 clubs, but a lean set of around 5 to 9 - a teeing club, a few irons or hybrids, one or two wedges, and a putter - is plenty to start playing and having fun.
  • Get your club length, lie angle and shaft flex matched to your height, posture and swing speed - through a fitting or a simple at-home measurement - before you buy.

  • Swap your long irons, roughly the 3 through 5, for a hybrid - it launches higher and forgives mishits far better, making it much easier to get the ball airborne.
