How to hit a driver

Golf / Popular

Tee height, ball position and upward attack angle for longer drives.

What coaches agree on

  • Tilt your upper body away from the target at address so your trail shoulder sits noticeably lower than your lead shoulder.
  • Take a wider stance for the driver than you use for your irons.

Common mistakes

  • Attacking the ball on a steep, descending path like an iron swing is the most common power-and-contact killer with the driver; the club should be moving level or slightly upward through impact.
  • An arms-only backswing that doesn't turn the shoulders and torso forces the club to come over the top and cut across the ball from outside-in on the downswing.
  • Gripping the club weakly or in the palm instead of the fingers leaves the clubface open at impact, starting the ball right and curving it further right.
