Iron shots

Golf / Popular

Strike irons ball-first with a descending blow and consistent low point.

What coaches agree on

  • Shift your weight onto your lead side and turn your hips toward the target as you start the downswing, getting your lower body ahead of the ball by impact.
  • Position the ball near the center of your stance for wedges and short irons, moving it progressively toward your lead foot as the clubs get longer.

Common mistakes

  • Swaying laterally away from the ball, or lifting and dipping up and down, instead of rotating around a stable spine angle.
  • Flipping or scooping the wrists at impact, trying to help the ball into the air, instead of keeping the hands ahead of the clubhead through contact.
