Bench press

Gym (men) / Popular

Build pressing strength with stable setup, touch point, and shoulder-friendly technique.

What coaches agree on

  • Set up tight before you unrack: pull your shoulder blades together and arch your upper back so your chest is up, rather than pressing with a flat back.
  • Press the bar back toward your shoulders as you drive up off your chest, rather than straight up and down.

  • Lower the bar under control and pause briefly as it touches your chest instead of bouncing it, especially when training for muscle growth.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the shoulders round forward and the chest cave in as a set gets hard, which lets the front delts take over and burn instead of the chest.
  • Flaring the elbows too wide, or choosing a grip that is too narrow or too wide, tips the forearms away from vertical at the bottom instead of stacking under the bar, straining the shoulder and pulling tension off the chest.
