Core bracing

Gym (men) / Popular

Coordinate breath, trunk tension, and rib position for compound lifts.

What coaches agree on

  • Brace all the way around your trunk, not just the front — the same tightness should be in your sides and lower back as in your abs.
  • Find the right contraction by imagining you are about to take a punch to the stomach — that reflexive tightening is the brace.

  • Keep breathing steadily through the brace — hold the tension, not your breath.

Common mistakes

  • Sucking the belly button in and hollowing the stomach gets mistaken for bracing, but it does not create enough stability to handle heavy weight.
