Farmer's walk

Gym (men) / Popular

Load and carry heavy for grip, core and trunk stability.

What coaches agree on

  • Pick the weight up like a deadlift: squat down, grip it, and drive up through your legs and hips rather than your back.
  • Center your grip on the handle, roughly where your middle finger lines up with the middle of your foot, so it doesn't tip forward or backward as you lift.

  • Keep your chest up and shoulders back for the whole walk so your torso never leans forward.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing a turn instead of slowing down lets the implement swing into your leg and pry your hand open, costing you your grip.
  • Letting the handle settle down into your fingers instead of sitting across your palm makes your grip give out early.
  • Wearing wrist straps takes away the grip-strength benefit that's the whole point of the exercise.
