Training split basics

Gym (men) / Popular

Full body, upper/lower or push-pull-legs.

What coaches agree on

  • Train each muscle group at least twice a week. Most muscles finish recovering and growing within 2 to 4 days, so spacing sessions a full week apart, like a traditional "bro split" does, leaves growth on the table.
  • Match your split to your training age and weekly volume needs. Beginners tend to grow well on simple, frequent full-body sessions, while lifters who need more total volume add training days, like an upper/lower or push-pull-legs split, to fit it in.

  • The split that works best is the one you'll actually stick to; enjoyment and consistency matter more than chasing the theoretically optimal structure.

Common mistakes

  • Retraining the same muscle while it's still sore, or stacking related muscles like shoulders, chest, and triceps on back-to-back days, works a muscle again before it has recovered.
  • Cramming an entire muscle's weekly volume into one long session lets quality drop off by the third or fourth exercise, turning the extra sets into wasted "junk volume".
