Stance

Muay Thai

Square, rear-loaded stance with the lead leg free to check.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep slightly more weight on your back leg so your lead leg stays light and free to check or fire off a kick without hesitation.
  • Keep your hands up around eyebrow level with your chin tucked down, since a lower guard leaves you open to elbows and head kicks.

  • Stay light on the balls of your feet with your heels off the ground, so you're always ready to move, kick, or spring.

Common mistakes

  • Standing bladed and side-on like a boxer, instead of square, leaves your lead leg too slow to check kicks and turns you into a bigger target for the round kick.
