Uppercut

Muay Thai

Uppercuts inside and to open the clinch.

What coaches agree on

  • Generate uppercut power by driving up through your legs and hips into the shoulder.
  • Land the uppercut by chaining it behind another shot - a jab, hook, or body shot.
  • Throw the uppercut at a closer range than your jab or cross, closing the distance first.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the elbow flare out to the side, throwing the uppercut on a looping angle instead of straight up the middle.
  • Dropping the hand down low and winding up big before throwing, telegraphing the punch.
  • Leaving the hand hanging out after the punch lands instead of snapping it straight back to the guard.
