Padel rules for beginners

Padel / Popular

Scoring, serving, walls and what counts as out.

What coaches agree on

  • The serve must be underarm and at or below waist height, bounced off the ground yourself first, and aimed diagonally into the service box - with two attempts before it's a fault.
  • During play, the ball must bounce on the ground before it's allowed to touch a wall - hit a wall on the full, before it bounces, and the point is over.

  • The glass is always fair game to play off - on a serve or your own redirect - but the fence is not; touching the fence, even after a bounce, puts the ball out.

Common mistakes

  • Volleying the return of serve before it bounces - since volleys are normal everywhere else in the rally, beginners often forget the return of serve specifically has to be let bounce first.
  • Drifting over the service line, or taking more than one step, before contacting the ball on the serve - an illegal foot fault, even though it gives no real advantage.
