What coaches agree on

  • Call 'mine' or 'yours' clearly and firmly the moment you decide a ball is yours, whether it's down the middle at the back or an overhead at the net.
  • When your partner is scrambling for a lob and can't see the opponents, keep telling them where they are - both back, both at net, how close - right up until they hit the ball.

  • Move up to the net and back to defend together, holding the same depth as your partner to keep the middle covered.

Common mistakes

  • Correcting your partner or telling them what to play in the middle of a match, instead of discussing it, adds pressure and rarely fixes anything in the moment.
