Pickleball lob

Pickleball / Popular

Use offensive and defensive lobs to move opponents off the line.

What coaches agree on

  • Set up and start the lob exactly like your dink, with a small, compact swing, so opponents can't read it coming until the last instant.
  • Look for your lob when you and your partner are set at the kitchen line and your opponent is off-balance, reaching, or caught out of position, such as mid-poach, recovering from a wide ball, or leaning in.

  • Hit the lob deep with a few feet of margin over your opponent's reach, and place it toward their backhand rather than their forehand.

Common mistakes

  • Snapping the lob up with just the wrist and arm, instead of staying balanced and lifting through it with the legs, pops the ball up short for an easy put-away or sends it sailing long.
