Absorb pace and reset the ball into the kitchen under pressure.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep your grip on the paddle light and loose so it absorbs the ball's pace; a tight grip acts like a wall and sends the ball flying off or popping up.
  • Keep the paddle face open and angled up through contact so the ball gets loft and time to travel into the kitchen; a flat or closed face drives it into the net.

  • Split-step into a stable, ready position right as your opponent is about to make contact, so your feet are already set before you have to react to the ball.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging or punching at the ball instead of holding the paddle still and letting the ball's own pace rebound off it sends the reset long past the kitchen or pops it up for an easy attack.
  • Standing tall in a narrow stance instead of getting low with a wide, bent-knee base leaves you unable to get down to a fast ball at your feet, causing a rushed reach or a popped-up ball.

Coach's take: Genuinely deep technical content from a tour pro -- there's a product plug in the middle, but the lesson itself doesn't let up.
