Pilates breathing

Pilates / Popular

Lateral thoracic breathing, the first Pilates principle.

What coaches agree on

  • Direct your inhale wide into the sides and back of your rib cage, like a balloon expanding, rather than into your belly.
  • On the exhale, draw your deep abdominals in toward your spine to engage your core, rather than moving your ribs or spine to do the work.
  • Exhale during the hardest, most effortful part of a movement, and use the inhale to prepare or set up for it.

Common mistakes

  • Gripping the jaw or glutes, or letting the shoulders creep up toward the ears, instead of staying relaxed while you breathe.

Coach's take: This is the one that actually tells you when to breathe during an exercise, not just how.
