Arm Swing Mechanics

Running / Popular

Use efficient arm drive to support stride and balance.

What coaches agree on

  • Bend your elbows to about a 90-degree angle and hold that bend as you swing.
  • Keep your hands and shoulders loose - a light, relaxed grip works better than a clenched fist.

  • Drive your elbow back on every stride; that backward pull does more for your speed and rhythm than reaching forward.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the arms swing side to side across the body's midline instead of straight front-to-back, which bleeds energy and throws off balance.
  • Letting the shoulders and arm swing go stiff and shrink as fatigue sets in late in a run, weakening their ability to control the torso's rotation and making the stride shorten and get choppy.
