Post-run stretching

Running / Popular

Cool down and stretch after a run.

What coaches agree on

  • Breathe slowly through each stretch and let your exhale run a little longer than your inhale — that's what actually signals your body to relax and release the muscle.
  • Move gently in and out of each stretch with small pulses, rocks, or a few repeated reps to help the muscle release.

  • Work both sides and notice if one feels tighter than the other — that's useful feedback about asymmetry or an old injury you're carrying.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing a stretch to maximum tightness or real pain, rather than easing back to a moderate feeling coaches put at around 7 out of 10.
  • Trying to match the presenter's exact depth or shape in a follow-along video instead of stopping where your own body's flexibility allows.
