Running Form & Posture

Running / Popular

Establish upright posture, lean, and relaxed upper-body mechanics.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep your head balanced directly over your shoulders, with your chin level and drawn back slightly, rather than letting it poke forward.
  • Keep your forward lean slight — just enough from a tall, aligned position to create momentum, not an exaggerated lean.

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed and down away from your ears rather than letting them ride up and tighten.

Common mistakes

  • Letting your hips sit back and bending forward at the waist, instead of keeping your body in one line and leaning forward from the ankles.
  • Letting your arms swing across your body's midline instead of driving them straight forward and back.
