Hockey stop

Skiing / Popular

Pivot both skis across the fall line for a fast, controlled stop.

What coaches agree on

  • Turn both skis together, matched and parallel, so they pivot across the fall line as one unit.
  • Rise up to unweight the skis, pivot them together across the hill, then sink back down to drive the edges in and stop.
  • Keep your upper body facing down the hill while your legs and feet do the turning - that separation is what makes the stop controlled.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back during the stop, which unweights the ski tips and lets the skis run out from under you instead of gripping to a stop.
