Skiing steeps

Stay balanced and in control on steep pitches.

What coaches agree on

  • Plant your pole with commitment on every turn on steep terrain - a rhythmic, well-timed pole plant sets your balance and drives you into the next turn.
  • Practice short, controlled turns that hold a steady speed and rhythm on easier terrain before you take them onto steeper pitches.
  • Sideslip down the fall line to control your speed and read the terrain when a pitch feels like more than you can turn confidently.

Common mistakes

  • Rotating the shoulders and hips together with the skis into every turn, skiing the whole body as one rigid block.
  • Retreating into the back seat, weight on the heels and tails, when the terrain feels intimidating or at the end of a turn.
  • Leaning the body into the hill because it feels safer, which shifts weight onto the uphill ski and makes the downhill ski hard to release into the next turn.
