1v1 Beating Moves

Soccer (Individual Skills) / Popular

Learn moves to beat a defender one-on-one.

What coaches agree on

  • Attack the defender directly and at pace, taking light touches that keep the ball close to your feet so you can react the instant they move.
  • Change your speed as you approach the defender - slow to draw them in, then explode past them. That burst of pace creates the separation, more than any specific trick.
  • Read the defender's stance and commit your whole body - shoulders, hips, and eyes, not just your feet - to the fake, so their weight shifts onto their weak side and you can accelerate past it.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for flashy, complicated skill moves instead of a simple cut, body feint, or change of pace - the extra complexity adds risk without adding much benefit.
