What coaches agree on

  • Match your fin setup to the wave: more fins, or added side fins, give extra hold and control in fast, steep, or powerful waves, while fewer fins keep the board loose and playful in small, mellow ones.
  • Match your board's outline and rocker to the wave: flatter, fuller boards with a wide nose glide and pick up speed easily in small or mushy waves, while a curvier, narrower board wants steeper, more powerful waves, where it rewards committed turns with more speed and control.
