Half volley

Tennis / Popular

Handle the ball off the bounce in transition.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep moving forward through the shot — let your split step and footwork carry your body toward the net instead of planting your feet and stroking from a stop.
  • Bend your knees and get your whole body down to the height of the ball, staying low all the way through contact.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the racket up high or taking it back before contact, which forces a high-to-low hacking swing that pops the ball up instead of keeping it low.
  • Leaving the racket face open like a slice instead of squared and closed, which lets the ball ride up off the strings and balloon long.
