Slice Backhand

Tennis / Popular

Hit a controlled backspin slice with proper technique.

What coaches agree on

  • Start your racket up above shoulder height and swing it down through the ball to contact — this high-to-low path is what creates the backspin, not how open the racket face is.
  • Turn your shoulders sideways, or a touch past sideways, with a step to the side before you swing, so your back faces the net.

  • Hold the racket with a Continental grip for the slice.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the racket face too wide at contact — many players think it needs to be 45 degrees or more open — makes the ball float up and sit high instead of staying low.
