Handstand

Drills and progressions toward a handstand.

What coaches agree on

  • Because your full bodyweight passes through your wrists, spend real time warming them up and mobilizing them before you start working on the pose.
  • Grip the ground actively with your fingers and press your weight into the base of the hand, near the thumb and index finger — that's what actually controls your balance.

  • Draw your ribs down and in toward your pelvis into a hollow-body shape to keep your torso stacked directly over your hands.
  • Push the floor away and actively spread your shoulder blades wide — that shoulder engagement is what keeps you stacked and stops you from collapsing under your own weight.
