Headstand (Sirsasana)

Yoga / Popular

Build a safe, controlled headstand.

What coaches agree on

  • Before you lift, build your base: check that your elbows are shoulder-width apart, and when you interlock your fingers, tuck the bottom pinky in so your hands form an even, flat cradle for your head.
  • Bring the crown of your head to the floor — not your forehead, and not further back near your hairline — so your neck keeps its natural curve.
  • Press down through your forearms to lift your shoulder blades up and away from your ears, so your arms and shoulders carry the weight instead of your neck.
  • Come down with control afterward and rest in child's pose for a minute so your blood pressure and circulation can settle before you stand up.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping or kicking the legs up explosively instead of lifting them with slow, controlled strength.
