Backhand clear

Badminton / Popular

Recover from pressure with a compact backhand clear toward the rear court.

What coaches agree on

  • Grip the racket in a bevel grip - thumb on the ridge of the handle, not flat on the back - and shift to a panhandle grip only when the shuttle is very far behind you.
  • Keep your grip and arm relaxed through the swing and tighten only at the moment of contact - tension kills your power.
  • Generate your power through a sequential whip - legs and core into the shoulder, then the elbow, forearm, wrist, and finally the fingers - rather than muscling the shot with your arm alone.

Common mistakes

  • Starting the swing with the elbow already raised instead of dropped, which limits you to arm-and-shoulder power instead of driving up through the legs and body.
  • Pressing the thumb flat across the back of the grip instead of onto the bevel ridge, which turns the racket face outward and sends the shuttle wide or into the net.
  • Reaching for the shuttle too far from the body - letting it get behind you or overstretching - instead of keeping the contact point close beside you with a slight bend in the arm.

Coach's take: Proper deep dive on the backhand clear - bevel grip, elbow pre-move, forearm/shoulder rotation, the lot. Ignore the plug at the end, the teaching is gold.

Coach's take: Good insight on adapting swing to shuttle speed - assumes you can already hit the shot.
