Cross court net shot

Badminton / Popular

Play a tight net shot across the court to move the opponent.

What coaches agree on

  • Set up and hold every cross-court net shot exactly like a straight net shot or lift, keeping that same look for as long as possible before turning the racket at the last moment.
  • Generate the cross-court angle by dropping your elbow back toward your body and rotating your forearm as you close the racket face across the shuttle.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging with a big arm motion or gripping too tightly turns the shot into a hard hit that flies too high or out of bounds and can throw off your balance.
  • Turning the racket face, or pulling the racket away from the shuttle, too early tips off the opponent, who reads the shot and covers the corner before it arrives.

Coach's take: The exception to the usual 'keep your wrist locked' net-shot rule for low, far cross nets is the kind of nuance you don't get from a generic tutorial.
