Finish loose net shots with a fast, controlled kill.

What coaches agree on

  • Move forward and attack the shuttle as early and as high above the net as you can, rather than waiting for it to sink down to you.
  • Generate your power from the grip, not the arm: hold it loosely as you approach, then snap it tight right at contact, using your fingers on the forehand and your thumb on the backhand.

  • When the shuttle is tight to the net or carries spin, brush the racket sideways across it in a wiping motion instead of hitting straight through.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a big, arm-driven swing instead of a short compact action — this reaches the shuttle late and often ends with it in the net or flying long.
  • Letting the racket or your body touch the net during the shot, which is an automatic fault.
