Net shot

Badminton / Popular

Control tight spinning replies close to the tape.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep a loose, relaxed grip on the racket - tension in your hand kills the touch and control a tight net shot needs.
  • Get to the shuttle as early as possible, using a strong split-step and lunge so you arrive in control rather than stretching for a late shot.
  • Let your forward lunge carry the shuttle over the net and keep your arm and racket movement small and quiet.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to steer the cross-court net shot with the wrist, instead of rotating the forearm, costs control and consistency.
  • Letting the racket arm go fully straight, or tucking it in too close to the body, cuts control at the net.
