Breakfalls

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Land safely from throws and takedowns.

What coaches agree on

  • Tuck your chin to your chest as you fall so your head never touches the mat.
  • Make contact with a flat palm, not your knuckles or a closed fist.
  • Learn each breakfall low to the ground first, seated or in a squat, before practicing it from standing.

Common mistakes

  • Landing with your arm locked straight, instead of bent at an angle, drives the impact into your shoulder, wrist, or elbow instead of spreading it out.
