Guillotine choke

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Catch and finish the guillotine, high elbow and arm-in.

What coaches agree on

  • To finish, curl your choking-hand's wrist up toward your own shoulder or chest in a high-elbow motion, driving the squeeze from your upper body and shoulders.
  • Keep your opponent's hips on the same side of your centerline as their head; once their body swings across to the far side, the choke becomes very hard to finish.
  • When the arm is trapped inside the choke (an arm-in guillotine), switch to an adjusted grip, such as a reverse grip, to keep the pressure on the neck instead of the armpit.

Common mistakes

  • The most common error is arching straight back and lying flat instead of turning to your side, which turns the choke into a neck-stretching crank and lets the opponent's head slip free.
  • Another frequent mistake is stopping as soon as the hand reaches the neck and squeezing immediately, instead of driving the hand and wrist all the way through for full depth first.

Coach's take: Excellent -- clear analogies, corrects the natural first-attempt mistake, builds real detail on top.

Coach's take: Clean and correct, if a little bare-bones - good starting point, not much beyond the basics.
