Posture and base

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Stay upright and heavy so you are hard to sweep or submit.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep real, weight-bearing contact with the ground — heavy knees or feet you can actually push off, not just resting there — so you always have a stable base to move and absorb pressure from.
  • Keep your spine straight in one line from your head to your hips; letting it bend or twist under pressure is what makes you weak and easy to move.
  • Tuck your tailbone under instead of arching your lower back — that alone locks your posture in place so you don't need your hands to hold yourself up, leaving them free to control your opponent.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping your head or looking down instead of keeping your eyes up and forward — that's exactly when your posture gets broken down or you get taken down.

Coach's take: Explains WHY leaning forward gets you swept, not just that it does -- that's the part most instructors skip.
