Turtle position

Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Popular

Attack and defend the turtle.

What coaches agree on

  • Break your opponent down off their base onto a hip or shoulder before attacking - a turtle that's still square and balanced is very hard to attack directly.
  • Control the back with a seatbelt grip: one arm over the far shoulder, one arm under the near armpit, gripping your own forearm.

  • As you move around to the back, wedge your knee into the gap between their elbow and knee so they can't recompose guard.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing for the second hook before your chest-to-back connection and knee position are locked in lets your opponent hip out, sprawl, or recover guard.
