Counter-punching

Boxing / Popular

Read, slip and answer with the right counter.

What coaches agree on

  • Bait the punch you want to counter with a light jab, a faint, or a deliberately exposed target such as a dropped hand or a high guard, instead of waiting for your opponent to attack on their own.
  • Return fire the instant your defense lands: let a parry, catch, or slip flow straight into the counter, because any delay lets the opponent's guard reset.

  • Sink your weight into the slip or shift itself so the same motion that moves your head off the line also loads power into the counter.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching too far on a parry, a block, or a jab left hanging out, instead of a short motion that snaps straight back to guard, leaves your own guard open and your vision blocked so you can't see the return.
