The Jab

Boxing / Popular

Throw a fast, technically correct jab and return to guard.

What coaches agree on

  • Lead with the jab to measure your range and open the way for your other punches — the coaches agree that if you can land the jab, everything behind it lands too.
  • Keep the lead arm and hand loose as the punch goes out and squeeze the fist only at the moment it lands, because that looseness is where the jab's speed comes from.

  • Rotate the whole arm as you extend it so the palm turns down at the end and you land on the first two knuckles.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the lead hand loop or fall on the way back instead of returning it straight to your cheek — that lazy retraction is exactly what opponents time their overhand right on.
  • Dropping or cocking the hand before you throw, which coaches call hitching — it announces the jab in plenty of time for the other guy to block it or counter it.
  • Reaching and leaning in to cover the distance instead of bringing your feet with you, which puts you off balance and walks you onto the counter.
