Choosing climbing shoes

Climbing / Popular

Pick fit, shape and stiffness for your level and the climbing you do.

What coaches agree on

  • Size your shoes snugly enough to eliminate dead space, especially around the heel, so your foot can't shift when you weight a foothold.
  • Match your shoe's stiffness and downturn to your experience and the terrain: flatter and stiffer for beginners and all-day comfort, softer and more downturned as you advance to steeper walls and smaller holds.

  • Try shoes on in person across a few different brands, since fit and shape vary significantly from one brand to the next.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing down aggressively for a painfully tight fit, on the belief that more pain means more performance, mainly causes calluses and cut circulation rather than better climbing.
