Using Clipless Pedals

Cycling / Popular

Clip in and out smoothly without falling.

What coaches agree on

  • Practice clipping in and unclipping while stationary - leaning against a wall, a tree, or on an indoor trainer - until the motion feels automatic, before you try it on the road.
  • To release your foot, twist your heel outward - that is the one motion that disengages the cleat from the pedal.

  • Set your pedal's release tension as low as it will go when you are starting out, then increase it once you are comfortable clipping in and out.

Common mistakes

  • Staying clipped in too long and forgetting to unclip before you actually come to a stop is the classic beginner fall - it happens to nearly everyone at least once.
