Ball position

Golf / Popular

Move the ball through the stance correctly for each club.

What coaches agree on

  • Center the ball in your stance for wedges and short irons, then move it gradually forward through the mid and long irons until it sits at or just inside your lead heel for the driver.
  • Check your ball position against your upper body, such as your sternum or shirt logo, not just your feet, since the same spot relative to your feet can sit in a different place relative to your swing once your stance width changes.

  • Treat these ball positions as a starting range rather than one fixed spot, and nudge the ball forward or back an inch within that range to suit your own swing or the shot you are trying to hit.
