Alignment

Golf / Popular

Aim the clubface and body at the target instead of where it feels right.

What coaches agree on

  • Pick a small intermediate target — a leaf, a divot, a patch of different-colored grass a few feet in front of the ball, right on your line to the target — and aim your clubface at that instead of the target itself.
  • Your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders should all sit parallel to the target line, not just your feet.

  • Practice regularly with two alignment sticks on the ground, or have a friend check you on the course — correct alignment often feels like you're aiming well left or right until your eye gets trained to it.

Common mistakes

  • Walking up to the ball from the side instead of starting from directly behind it leaves the body aimed closed to the target before the club is even set down.
  • Checking your aim by lifting your head and turning it until your eyes go level gives a false reading every time, no matter how you're actually aligned, because the target looks the same regardless.
