Posture

Golf / Popular

Set spine angle, knee flex and distance from the ball.

What coaches agree on

  • Set your spine angle by hinging forward from your hip joints, not by bending at the waist, so your back stays flat as you tilt over the ball.
  • Settle your weight toward the balls of your feet, evenly balanced, rather than back on your heels or forward on your toes.

  • Once you've tilted into position, let your arms hang down naturally from your shoulders rather than reaching them toward the ball.

Common mistakes

  • Standing up out of posture on the way down, so the chest rises and pulls away from the ball instead of holding the forward tilt — what coaches call early extension.
  • Squatting down into the knees instead of hinging from the hips, which rocks the weight back onto the heels and leaves golfers off balance.
  • Letting the upper back round and the shoulder blades pull apart so much that the arms disconnect from the body and rotation gets restricted.
