How to stop hooking

Golf / Popular

Fix a closed face and in-to-out path that sends the ball left.

What coaches agree on

  • Deliberately practice hitting an exaggerated fade or slice, then gradually tone it down to a gentle one, to retrain the feel of a path and face that work together instead of against each other.

Common mistakes

  • A grip rotated too far into a strong position, with more than two or three knuckles visible on the lead hand, closes the clubface through impact and is the most common cause coaches find.
  • The hands flip and close the clubface before impact instead of after, often because the legs and hips stop turning while the hands speed up to compensate.
