Putting distance control

Golf / Popular

Control pace and lag long putts close.

What coaches agree on

  • Build your own feel for distance by practicing specific stroke lengths on the practice green and measuring exactly how far the ball rolls out, so you have a known reference stroke for each distance before you play.
  • Use your flat-putt stroke length as a baseline, then take a shorter stroke for downhill putts and a longer one for uphill putts to match the slope.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the same backswing length on every putt and trying to hit it harder or softer to change distance, or taking a big backswing and decelerating into the ball, makes pace very hard to judge.
  • Judging pace only by whether the putt drops in the hole can be misleading, since a putt that's actually too hard or too soft can still go in and hide bad speed.
