Wedge distance control

Golf / Popular

Dial in partial wedge yardages with clock-face swing lengths.

What coaches agree on

  • Pick one repeatable reference — a clock-face swing length, a body landmark such as your hip or chest, or a percentage of your full swing — and let that length control how far the ball flies.
  • Narrow your stance and move closer to the ball as the shot gets shorter, and widen back out as the swing gets longer.

  • Test each reference swing on the range with a rangefinder or launch monitor so you actually know its yardage before trusting it on the course.

Common mistakes

  • Taking the backswing too far for the shot and then decelerating or steering through impact, instead of keeping one committed, accelerating tempo no matter the swing length.

Coach's take: Great starting system if you've never measured your wedge yardages before - just know real life adds some wrinkles the simple math doesn't cover.

THE KEYS TO WEDGE DISTANCE CONTROL

Coach's take: Good insight if you can get past the rambling - a swing length you can repeat beats trying to manually feel out a speed.
