Uneven lies

Golf / Popular

Adjust setup and swing for uphill, downhill and sidehill lies.

What coaches agree on

  • A slope changes how much loft actually reaches the ball, so take a less lofted club on an uphill lie and a more lofted club on a downhill lie to still reach your target distance.
  • On a side-hill lie the ball will curve in the direction the ground tilts, so aim to allow for that curve rather than trying to swing it dead straight at the target.
  • Take a practice swing before playing the shot and feel where the clubhead brushes the ground, since that is where the ball should go rather than wherever theory says it should sit.

Common mistakes

  • Staying upright or leaning back away from the slope instead of tilting your shoulders and weight to match the hill bottoms the club out in the wrong spot, producing fat, thin, bladed, or scooped shots and throwing off your balance.
