Punch shot

Golf / Popular

Play a low, controlled shot from trouble or into the wind.

What coaches agree on

  • Play the ball further back in your stance than you would for a normal shot.
  • Set up with your hands ahead of the clubhead so the shaft leans forward, taking loft off the club before you swing.

  • Take at least one extra club with less loft than you would normally use for the distance.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging harder to fight the wind backfires — it launches the ball higher and adds spin instead of keeping it down.
  • Letting the hands drift back level with the clubhead during the swing — by chicken-winging the lead arm, standing back up out of posture, or scooping at the ball — closes the face into a hook or lets the loft creep back in for a thin, high, or ballooned shot.
