Bulking nutrition

Gym (men) / Popular

Eat to gain muscle without unnecessary fat.

What coaches agree on

  • Keep your calorie surplus small to moderate. A bigger surplus doesn't build muscle any faster, it mostly adds body fat.
  • Eat roughly 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, which is enough to support muscle growth without needing more.
  • Track your food intake and body weight over time, and adjust your calories up or down based on the results instead of guessing.

Common mistakes

  • Starting a bulk before getting reasonably lean first, which makes the surplus less efficient (more fat gained per pound of muscle) and sets up a long cut later.
  • Bouncing endlessly between bulking and cutting phases, or never actually finishing a bulk, without making real long-term progress in either direction.
